The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a
standardized test designed to test your ability to understand
Standard North American English. Standardized tests are multiple
choice exams administered to many people and graded primarily by
computers — they are widely used in the United States for college
and graduate school admissions and professional licensing
exams.
The TOEFL is written and administered by the Educational
Testing Service (ETS), a private, not-for-profit company based in
Princeton, New Jersey. It was developed to help American and
Canadian colleges and universities evaluate the level of
English-language proficiency of international student applicants.
Professional licensing programs, government agencies and
scholarship programs also use the TOEFL to evaluate prospective
applicants. Educational institutions outside the United States
who use English as the language of instruction also use the TOEFL
to measure English ability.
You may need a certain TOEFL score to get into a particular
college or university. However, even a great TOEFL score does not
guarantee that you will get into the college of your choice. Nor
does a great TOEFL score guarantee academic success. To succeed
in school, you also need to know how to communicate in English.

States.
In July of 1998, the TOEFL converted to a computer format in
most areas of the world. Kaplan has answered many of your
questions about the CBT (Computer Based Test). You can also learn
how to register for the TOEFL.
